White abalone are one of seven species of abalone native to the waters of the Pacific off California's coast, and the first marine invertebrate to be listed as endangered. A captive breeding and outplanting program has been established to support the recovery of white abalone populations in the wild. The rocky reefs at the floor of the giant kelp forests in Southern California are the historic habitat for several abalone species, including green, pink, red, pinto and white abalone.
